The pop star attended Variety's Hitmakers on December 2nd, where she and her brother Finneas were honored with Film Song of the Year for "What Was I Made For?", featured in Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie. When asked to clarify if she meant to come out in her recent Variety cover story while on the red carpet, Billy said, "We got to talk about your cover story because you mentioned that you felt like for a long time women didn't like you, and when that came out, all the women were like, 'No, we love her.' How did that reception feel? Did your perception change a little bit?"

"I'm still scared of them, but I think they're pretty," Billy replied. "Did you mean to come out in the story?"

"Girl, no, I didn't," Billy admitted. "But I kind of thought, 'Wasn't it obvious?' Like, it's kind of been out there. I just didn't realize people didn't know. So, we need to get to a point where you don't even have to come out. So, I, I, I just don't really believe in it. I'm just like, 'Why can't we just exist?' I've been doing this for a long time, and I just didn't talk about it. Whoops."

"Same," said Finneas. "I literally was like to my mom, 'I'm dating women now,' but I was like, 'I was like, I saw all the articles, I was like, 'Oh, I guess I, I guess I came out today.' I was like, 'Oh, I guess okay, cool.' But it's exciting to me because, you know, people didn't know, so it's cool that they know. But, oh, I'm nervous talking about it."

Her comment comes in reference to Variety's Power of Women issue, published November 13th, where the Grammy Award winner got candid about her own femininity and womanhood. Billy said, "I've never felt like I could relate to girls very well. I love them so much. I love them as people. I'm attracted to them as people. I'm attracted to them for real."

Explaining how she's always assumed other women didn't like her, the 21-year-old continued, "I have deep connections with women in my life: the friends in my life, the family in my life. I'm physically attracted to them, but I'm also so intimidated by them and their beauty and their presence."

As for her past relationship, Billy was last with the neighborhood musician Jesse Rutherford. The pair split in May after less than a year of dating.
